CAATE recently released a final decision regarding the naming of masters degrees under the new standards.
Standard: Professional programs result in the granting of a master's degree in Athletic Training. The program must be identified as an academic athletic training degree in institutional academic publications.
Annotation: The CAATE recommends a Master of Athletic Training degree. The degree must appear on the official transcript similar to normal designations for other degrees at the institution. International programs must use language consistent with the host country’s nomenclature and have approval of that language by the CAATE.

NPI Numbers for ATs are a Must
The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit number that individually identifies all health care providers. The NATA is urging all ATs to have an NPI number as it is now becoming a standard in the healthcare environment, especially where Electronic medical records (EMRs) are concerned. You can read the statement from the NATA here. For further information and instructions on acquiring an NPI number, you can visit the following link: http://www.nata.org/NPI

Local AT Represents Delaware at National Safety Conference
The 2016 Collaborative Solutions for Safety in Sport National Meeting was a great opportunity for representatives from all 50 states to get together to discuss health and safety best practices and policy change for improving and implementing safety in high school sports. The 2 day conference focused on mental health issues in the student-athlete, implementing policies for AEDs and emergency planning for sudden cardiac arrest, dealing with heat illness in our athletes, and getting athletic trainers in all schools. The speakers were impressive and engaging, and the breakout discussion sessions brought up many useful and thought provoking situations, scenarios, and solutions. From a Delaware perspective, I was proud to see that as a state, we have already implemented many of the policies that were being discussed, and Kevin Charles, our DIAA Executive Director, was one of the speakers.
Some specific "take home message" topics that I think many Delaware athletic trainer's could benefit from include:
-Reviewing their Emergency Action Plan(s) and incorporating the "Anyone Can Save a Life" program.
(Including, sharing with coaches and athletes that an AED is most beneficial when used within 3 minutes. Knowing where they are located, or having one with an athletic trainer at all times is extremely important!)
-Realizing that work to rest ratios on hot and humid days are best determined by wet bulb globe
temperature and vary from field, to turf, to gym, etc. (Accu-weather phone apps are not accurate enough).
During a heat illness episode, taking rectal temperature is the gold standard, and active cooling before
transport gives athletes the best chance to make a full recovery.
-Supplements and "pre-workout" drinks are becoming a major problem for student athletes. Teaching
students that preseason and in-season is not the time for these supplements and getting to the root of why
they think they need it is important.
It was an added benefit that the meeting was held at the NCAA headquarters. We enjoyed dinner in the Hall of Champions, and were able to network with athletic trainers from states as far away as Hawaii and Alaska! Overall, I believe this is a very beneficial symposium, and would like to make sure Delaware is represented in the years to come. If anyone has any specific questions, or would like to discuss any of these topics further, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

Support Bill HR 921-The Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act
On February 12, 2015 the House of Representatives introduced H.R. 921: The Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act. Currently, an individual’s license only covers the medical professional while practicing within his or her licensure state. If an athletic trainer or physician travels across state lines with an athletic team, they may not have any legal protection during their brief trip. While some states may allow so many days for the visiting team’s medical professionals to practice with their respective insurance, there is no guarantee the allotted time frame will cover the entirety of the trip.
This Act states:
“If a covered sports medicine professional provides covered medical services to an athlete, an athletic team, or a staff member of an athlete or athletic team in a secondary State, such services shall be deemed to have been provided in the primary State for the following purposes:
(1) Determining the medical professional liability insurance of that professional.
(2) Determining the civil and criminal malpractice liability of that professional.”
If H.R. 921 is passed, physicians, athletic trainers and any other sports medicine professional working with an athletic team will be relieved of any professional risk one previously bore.
The purpose of this letter is to educate sports medicine professionals on a current legal issue in hopes of recruiting supporters. We ask that, as a practicing sports medicine professional, you will unite with us in advocating for our rights. It is unacceptable that we should put ourselves at undue professional risk while performing our medical duties in good faith. Please join our movement by visiting and sharing with your students www.change.org to sign a petition in support of H.R. 921. This petition will be sent to the House of Representatives in support of this bill.
